Q. I want information about John 12:24. How can I explain what the kernel of wheat represents for a Sunday School lesson I’m preparing on that topic?
 
A. John 12:24 reads like this. “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”
If you have a kernel of wheat and just keep it, it will always be only one kernel. But if you plant it in the ground it will grow up to be a stalk that contains many kernels.
Jesus was comparing Himself to that kernel. If He stayed alive He would be the only one of His kind in Heaven. But if He died and was buried, He could produce many like Him.
Romans 8:29 says that God wanted Jesus to be the firstborn among many brothers. And so it is. Because He fell to the Earth and died, you and I and millions more will spend eternity in Heaven with Him.
“For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day” (John 6:40)
