The January full moon, known as the Wolf Moon, Old Moon, or Moon after Yule, always shines in or near the stars of Gemini or Cancer. It rises at sunset and sets at sunrise, and the position of the ecliptic on winter nights causes January moons to culminate very high in the night sky. This full moon occurs fifteen hours before perigee, the point in the moon's orbit when it is closest to Earth, making it a supermoon, and generating high tides globally. This full moon will occur while the moon is on the ecliptic, producing a total lunar eclipse which will begin when the moon contacts the Earth's shadow at 10:34 p.m. EST on Saturday evening. The moon will pass deeply through the Earth's northern umbral shadow, extending totality to 1h02m in duration, and darkening the moon's southern half much more than its northern half. At greatest eclipse, which occurs at 12:13 a.m. EST, the moon will be 7 degrees west of Messier 44 (The Beehive Cluster). The partial phase of the eclipse will end at 1:51 a.m. EST. The entire eclipse will be visible from North and South America, the eastern Pacific Ocean, and westernmost Europe.

The Top Skywatching Events to Look for in 2019
By Joe Rao, Space.com Skywatching Columnist | January 3, 2019

Skywatching in 2019

Another year of skywatching is upon us, and there's a lot to look forward to in 2019!

Here are the 10 most noteworthy sky events. A total lunar eclipse, two close pairing-offs between the two brightest planets, a total solar eclipse for parts of Chile and Argentina and a rare transit of Mercury are among the celestial highlights that will take place in the new year. Of course ... Space.com's Night Sky column will provide more extensive coverage of these events as they draw closer.

On the 22nd of this month, January 2019:

https://www.space.com/39231-top-skywatching-events-this-year.html

Jan. 22: Venus and Jupiter, close embrace #1

Morning twilight crackles with the excitement of a close conjunction this morning between the two brightest planets. Venus will be passing 2.4 degrees to the upper left of Jupiter. Augmenting this display off to their right is the bright ruddy star, Antares. And on the morning of Jan. 31, a lovely crescent moon joins the array; Venus just to the moon's lower left and Jupiter well off to the moon's upper right.

More info from space.com on the blood moon ~
A total lunar eclipse will appear overnight from Sunday (Jan. 20) to Monday (Jan. 21), and the potentially copper-colored moon — dubbed a "blood moon" — will be visible from all of North and South America.

We are expected to have cloud cover during eclipse, but one can still hope for a change in weather or a patch of clear sky.

Great that you were able to view the lunar eclipse. We've been locked under cloud cover for days. Did have sunshine yesterday afternoon, but clouds again this morning so no view of the Venus - Jupiter embrace.

JH, you are the only one I know who saw it besides myself. It started, the moon getting covered by shadow, almost there, and then the clouds came, probably 95% cloud cover, but things were moving, so I would check every 6 minutes or so (the eclipse lasted almost an hour) and then voila the clouds parted for about 8 minutes and I viewed. Took pictures with my cell, (ok, but not the best). Fronk chose not to get up and view, but it was amazing. As far as I could tell, I was the only one looking up.

March supermoon
------

This year, in 2019, the full moon supermoon comes less than 4 hours after the arrival of the March 20th equinox, making this the closest coincidence of the March equinox and full moon since March 20, 2000.

Night Sky, January 2019: What You Can See Empty June 2019

Post by Tryphosa Mon Jun 10 2019, 09:18

Jupiter the month of June:

Monday, June 10 at 1:59 a.m. EDT — First Quarter Moon and Lunar X

Night Sky, January 2019: What You Can See Missing-image

(Image: :copyright:  Starry Night software)

After the moon has completed the first quarter of its orbit around Earth, the relative positions of the Earth, sun, and moon cause us to see the moon half-illuminated — on its eastern side. At first quarter, the moon always rises around noon and sets near midnight, so it is also visible in the afternoon daytime sky. The evenings around first quarter are the best times to see the lunar terrain while it is dramatically lit by low-angled sunlight. At this First quarter, a feature called the Lunar X will be visible in strong binoculars and small telescopes. For a few hours, the illuminated rims of the craters Parbach, la Caille, and Blanchinus form a small, but very obvious X-shape, which is located on the terminator about one third of the way up from the southern pole of the moon (at 2° East, 24° South).

Night Sky, January 2019: What You Can See Empty June 2019

Post by Tryphosa Sun Jun 16 2019, 20:39

Tonight!

On June 16, the almost-full moon will pass by Jupiter; they will come within nearly 2 degrees of each other (about four lunar diameters), according to In-The-Sky.org. Both will be in Ophiuchus and visible in the southeastern sky after sunset, which is at 8:29 p.m. in New York City. It may take some time for the sky to darken enough to see Jupiter, but by 9 p.m. the two will be obvious, and the pair will reach its highest point in the sky at 12:29 a.m. on June 17, when they will be about 26 degrees above the horizon. Farther south, the two will be higher in the sky – observers in Miami will see them reach a height of 41 degrees, and in Sydney, their altitude will be as much as 78 degrees (this time above the northern horizon).

And then so much more...
