Reposted from the Chat Thread (by request):

I read E.W. Bullinger's 'Witness of the Stars' yesterday.

It was entirely fascinating.  The 'story' has been there from time immemorial.  I hate and resent the fact that most all of it has been lost through design and disdain as I for one truly enjoy star gazing and always feel at one with the Creator when I observe His handiwork.

I have a couple of take-aways:

I like his comment that the stars don't make the pictures, but rather the pictures used the stars.  It answers why so often the star patterns do not look anything like what the "picture" suggests.  In other words, the STORY came first, not the stars!

The theme is steady throughout the star groupings ~ it's always a picture of Yeshua!

I found it insightful for a man of his time (late 19th century) to be aware of the separate destiny of Israel and that it was incorrect for the Church to assume Israel's place in God's plan.

He was aware through 'signs and seasons' that the end times were upon us and he was certainly one of the forerunners using the 360 day year calcs and knew that certain things were coming to announce God's plan.

from NRD thread: Matson ~ The Micah Prophecy (in Commentaries)...

Currently reading Ethelbert William Bullinger's The Witness of the Stars (originally published in 1893, my copy is a 2007 paperback). Bullinger covers the Sign Virgo, the Promised Seed of the Woman, chapter 1 - I am re-reading this. from book
The brightest star in Virgo is Tsemech (Hebrew), called Al Zimach in Arabic which means "The Branch."  EWB quote from book... Hence the star has a modern Latin  name, which has almost superseded the ancient one, Spica.

Spica was found to actually be a double star (I think Chuck Missler talks about this).

comment on Bullinger's book The Witness of the Stars
...E.W. Bullinger uses astronomy, celestial charts, and quotations from the Bible to make his case for the existence of God's Word within the movements and configurations of the stars themselves. Beginning with proof in Psalm 19 that "the Creator both numbered as well as named the stars of heaven," Bullinger interprets each of the Twelve Signs of the Zodiac as they relate to biblical prophecy, arriving at some interesting-and controversial-conclusions. British clergyman ETHELBERT WILLIAM BULLINGER (1837-1913) was one of the most respected Bible scholars of the 19th century. He is author of numerous works including Commentary on Revelation, Great Cloud of Witnesses, and How to Enjoy the Bible

FOUNDATIONS - Prophecy in the Heavens

Post by Tryphosa on Tue May 16 2017, 12:10

Before Bullinger there was Frances Rolleston (1781-1864) whose book Mazzaroth: or the Constellations was published in the year 1862.

This interesting and lengthy article was written by Joseph Herrin in 2014.  He goes into the earlier authors on the topic of the Mazzaroth.
-------

In the preceding chapter we looked at the divinely assigned role of the sun, moon, and stars as markers to indicate to God’s people His moedim (seasons, appointed times). Three times each year all the men of Israel were commanded to gather to the place appointed by God to observe the Feasts of Passover, Pentecost, and Tabernacles. The heavenly lights, specifically the moon, were used to establish the precise day when these events were to take place.

The Feast Days were not the only moedim whose proper time was announced by the lights Yahweh arranged in the heavens. It was previously noted that the appointed time for the birth of the Son of God was announced by a specific star whose message wise men from the East understood and acted upon. Similarly, we are told that the return of the Lord will be announced by signs in the sun, moon, and stars (Luke 21:25).

Christians rarely object to assertions that Yahweh assigned to the heavenly luminaries a timing role as a sort of divine calendar. Yet a Bible teacher will encounter great resistance should he begin to teach upon the prophetic role that sun, moon, and stars play in declaring the counsel of God. People fear that advocating a prophetic role for the constellations and various heavenly bodies is tantamount to promoting astrology. Satan has introduced many profane and heretical practices to humanity from the very earliest times. He is called “the great deceiver who deceives the whole world” (Revelation 12:9). Satan has induced men to embrace spiritually dark practices such as communication with the dead, hypnotism, spirit channeling, seances, Ouija boards, astrology and horoscopes. These last two hold a close relationship to the starry hosts and the location of the sun and moon in the heavens.

Beit Alpha Synagogue – Ancient Mosaics in Beit Alpha Synagogue National Park

Post by Tryphosa on Tue May 16 2017, 15:02

Just thought this was interesting...

Beit Alpha Synagogue – Ancient Mosaics in Beit Alpha Synagogue National Park

From the article--
The central section contains the zodiac, which was widely used in churchesand synagogues during the Byzantine period. The twelve signs are in a circle with their Hebrew names, with the four seasons in the corners. The zodiac was a common decoration in synagogues during this time period.

-------------------
Also referred to as Beth Alpha Synagogue

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beth_Alpha

This zodiac wheel, along with other similar examples found in contemporaneous synagogues throughout Israel such as NaaranSusiyaHamat Tiberias, Huseifa, and Sepphoris, rest at the center of a scholarly debate regarding the relationship between Judaism and general Greco-Roman culture in late-antiquity.[19] Some interpret the popularity that the zodiac maintains within synagogue floors as evidence for its Judaization and adaptation into the Jewish calendar and liturgy.[20]Others see it as representing the existence of a “non-Rabbinic” or a mystical and Hellenized form of Judaism that embraced the astral religion of Greco-Roman culture.[21]

You are welcome Ask. Good thing for pdf files, they are neat, tidy & easily accessible but nothing like a real book. I know first hand libraries get rid of old books.

From the other end ~ I read Bullinger's work on my Kindle ~ it was sorely lacking in the illustrations.

But hey ~ we've got the Heavens for reference!
