Is the Revelation 12 sign on September 23, 2017 just a Tribulation sign ... or is there more to the story? Could it be a picture of the pre-tribulation rapture of the church with strong exegetical evidence?

Some of it - bit of a review, but that's ok.

Unless what Joel was prophesying is a singular miraculous event, (which is what I have always supposed as an event near the end of the Tribulation period) solar and lunar eclipses would fill the bill.

Solar and lunar eclipses aren't unusual ~ but what is unusual is them occurring on the Feast Days.

I'd say a rash of them leading up to the event would be a good indicator.
