The Letter to the Hebrews

As we begin a study of the Letter to the Hebrews our goal is to make a very complex book of the Bible more understandable. This is the introduction and chapter 1.

Thanks for kicking this on off, Tryph ~ one of my very favorites! This book, more than any other, imo, helps us understand how truly confusing for 1st century believers to grasp the concept of the 'Church Age'

Lesson one set the stage for us as we get into the letter.

Jack explained who the players were and the background of the first believers, who were largely Pharisaical, and many were priests who witnessed the events of the crucifiction . It was difficult for them to grasp that Yeshua was actually the Son of God.

The points were:

1. Yeshua is the HEIR of all things. (And we, as He made Himself our brother, are joint heirs.)
2. He made ALL things ~ not just the world, but the universe as well.
3. He sustains all things ~ He's the One that keeps it all going.
4. He is the radiant glory of God.
5. He is the EXACT representation of God.
6. He made purification for all mankind's sin.
7. He SITS at the right hand of God the Father ~ He sits because the work is finished.

One thing that impresses me is the fact that Jewish life was consumed with obligations ~ it was a morning until night way of life. There was no facet of their existence that was not under some observance of the Law ~ 613 of them. It wasn't just a nod to God on Sundays.

Their whole LIFE was being turned upside down with the revelation of a new dispensation. I cannot begin to comprehend and fully appreciate the impact this had on them. I am sure they were shaken to the core. The destruction of the Temple and ruin of Jerusalem eventually drove the point home, and sadly, Yeshua's prophecy and tears for their blindness became fact.

The 2nd lesson covers Chapters 2 & 3

The two points that stick with me are that the 2nd person of the Trinity chose to become even lower than the angels and that, not even a "special" man ~ all to redeem mankind. And, as He became as we are for eternity, we also will be come as He is in eternity.

And today's Christians are aptly compared to the Exodus generation. Of the millions of adults that left Egypt, only Joshua and Caleb made it to the Promised Land. Similarly, Christians allow themselves to be defeated and live worthless lives by refusing to enter into God's rest.

As always, it hinges on belief ~ and that was the most difficult for the 1st century believers ~ to give up what they knew and could verify (keeping the Law) and step out in faith and just 'believe' and walk in faith.

The Letter to the Hebrews became a bridge of sorts, a bridge between Judiasm and Christianity. A bridge goes both ways. The Hebrews saw the Letter to the Hebrews as a bridge to Christianity and we Christians see it as a bridge to Judiasm.

JK said the 53rd chapter of Isaiah has been responsible for more Jewish converts to Christianity than all of the verses of the OT combined.

(Now in chapter 6)

In chapter 2-3, JK states God sees us as already raised up and seated in the Majesty with Christ. (past perfect tense, all ready completed)

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

Ephesians 2:4-7

Finished lesson Chapter 2-3

JK said our attitude should be like Jesus' attitude...

Philippians 2:5-11
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus,
who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God,
but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and
coming in the likeness of men.
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient
to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above
every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of
those on earth, and of those under the earth,
and [that] every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ [is] Lord, to the glory
of God the Father.

Yes, utterly amazing (and humbling) that He would become as the scum of the earth to ultimately lift those who accept Him to His position.

Truly, that is Love.

Things that were external and physical in the OT became internal and spiritual in the NT. The Old Testament fulfills the New Testament and the NT fulfills the OT.
The Creation is an example of OT external and physical. Personal salvation is our NT internal and spiritual.

More on Lesson 3, Hebrews Chapter 4...
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. Hebrews 4:1

JK hammered on this in the lesson. He estimates 90% believers live defeated lives. They have not entered God's Rest, they continued working and working on their salvation. The Work has been done and completed by Jesus Christ on the Cross.

I have to agree with Jack on this one.

That is WHY 1 John 1:9 is so very important. It is THE thing that replaces the LAW ~ most of the Law observance/sacrifices were designed to restore fellowship. We no longer need the works of the Law ~ we claim Messiah's work on our behalf and the forgiveness it affords, via confession.

"Confess" in the Greek is not an emotionally laden word ~ it's a legal term that means to cite or agree with. In other words, we don't agonize about it ~ we agree with God that, yes, we sinned and let Him restore us and He graciously takes care of that and even the ones unknown to us.

What a deal!

Completed Chapters 5 & 6 lesson. A few nuggets from the lesson...

Salvation comes with our belief. Behavior is not always reflective of our belief.

OT = external and physical is the Creation. The NT equivalent = internal and spiritual is salvation.

No longer is the OT external, physical acts of obedience. Now, it's the NT internal, spiritual faith that keeps us in line with God.
No longer sacrifices of lambs required for cleansing of sins. We now go to the Lamb in confession, asking for forgivenss of our sins - then we are purified.

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine;
he was the priest of God Most High.
And he blessed him and said:
"Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of
heaven and earth; Genesis 14:18-19

God is the Creator of heaven and earth. Satan doesn't pretend he can replace God, he can't create like God. But Satan can possess earth. He currently is running things on earth today. We are aliens here behind enemy lines.

There is so much in Chapter 7 & 8 lesson, I don't where to begin. So I wll just post this from the lesson intro...
The focus for this study is Jesus as our High Priest in the order of Melchizedek. We’ll discover why this priesthood is superior to that of Levi, and why it was necessary that a new and better priesthood be instituted to assure the security of the Church forever.

Re: The Letter to the Hebrews

To me, Hebrews summed up pretty much the whole problem with the Law ~ and the fact it did nothing for the sin problem that prohibits a relationship with God.

The sacrifices were made by imperfect men who were sinners, with the blood of animals that could not atone for sin (retroactive only) made at an altar that was a copy of the real one and the work was never done.

Along came Messiah Who was no sinner, offered the perfect blood sacrifice at the real altar in Heaven and sat down at the right hand of His Father when the work was finished.

The Law was only a picture (that portrayed the need for a savior) of what was to come. The Perfect came ~ Hallelujah!

Yes ~ Hallelujah!

In Chapters 7&8 Lesson JK highlighted and taught understanding on Melchizedek, priest and king, God Most High and the term Possessor from the following verses...

Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine;
he was the priest of God Most High.
And he blessed him and said:
"Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of
heaven and earth; Genesis 14:18-19
