Prophecy - Signs

Wendy Wippel

Don't look now, but the sun is about to do a back flip.  At least as far as the magnetic poles go. (Maybe even as I write this, or as you read it). Nobody expects this event to be (literally) earth-shaking.  But if the earth's poles flip? Apparently that'll be a completely different story.

As it happens, the magnetic poles of the sun flip regularly (about every eleven years, to be exact) in concert with the peak of each solar cycle, called the solar max. The shift happens because, at the peak of the solar cycle, the sun's inner magnetic forces start to reorganize. The last flip was 2001. So we're due.

And right on cue, signs that the solar switch is about to be flipped are unmistakable. Todd Hoeksema, director of Stanford University's Wilcox Solar observatory (one of the few observatories that monitors the solar poles), reports that the north pole has already switched magnetism, but the southern pole lags behind, sending magnetic ripples out into space. And not even a month ago, a space telescope documented a huge hole in the sun, the result of the progressive shifting of the solar poles.

Something big is about to happen.  Hoeksema predicts less than three months; some scientists much sooner.
According to NASA,  a flip of the sun's magnetic poles would cause massive changes in the  "current sheet", an area of electric current produced by the sun's rotating magnetic field.  During field reversals, the current sheet becomes very wavy, and Earth, like other planets, move in and out of that wavy sheet.

And passing through those waves of electric energy can stir up some pretty nasty space weather. What effect would those solar storms have on earth?  History gives us some clues:

1859: a solar storm (the strongest one on record) knocks out telegraph communication, lights telegraph offices on fire and shocks telegraph operators.
On the plus side, you could see the aurora borealis in Santiago. (And in Seattle, at midnight, read the paper by the light of it.)
1972: long-distance phone service knocked out
1989: Widespread power blackouts as electromagnetic currents melted transformers
2000: radio blackout, satellites short-circuit
2003: storm destroyed space sensors sent up to measure it
2006: GPS capability, satellite-to ground transmission lost; storm destroyed cameras intended to film the solar flares

How bad it is depends on what part of earth moves through the energy, and how charged the field is when it does.

But here's the rub: You can't pump gas or buy a pizza without swiping your card. And that requires satellite function. And if a solar storm the size of the 1859 Carrington storm happened today?  According to National Geographic, it would destroy the "cyber cocoon" we live in. That massive solar storm would  destroy modern life.

Act I? X-rays and ultraviolet light hit and ionize our atmosphere, destroying radio communication.
Act 2? A blast of radiation.
Act 3? A coronal mass ejection-- a cloud of charged particles that produces huge electromagnetic fluctuation.

And with that the curtain closes, and with it,  cell phones, GPS, ATMs, the power grid, you name it. The more populous coasts (because the power grids there are interconnected) will fall like dominos. And could be without power for years.

There goes life as we know it. And it won't be coming back any time soon.
(They don't sell those huge power-grid transformers at the dollar store. )

To be fair, nobody is saying that this solar pole reversal will set off those kinds of storms. Nobody knows. But we do know the reversal is going to happen, and soon.  And this flip is particularly interesting because the poles broke the pattern.

They didn't flip at the same time, and that lag time is what is created the coronal hole. Does that mean anything? I guess we'll see.

But what about a reversal of the earth's poles? The magnetic polarity of the earth does change occasionally; according to NASA, at an average of every 400,000 years.  NASA doubts that such a reversal would change the rotation of the earth significantly, saying "as far as we know, a magnetic reversal doesn't cause any harm to life on earth." Scientists who study earths geomagnetic flips believe that they may be related to impact events or major tectonic plate upheavals.

Would an impact event be enough to cause a literal flip of the poles? It is  known that even the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake was big enough to cause measurable changes of the earth's wobble.  And nobody really knows what a magnetic pole flip of the earth (being solid, unlike the sun) would cause.

The earth's magnetic field, constantly being re-energized, seems to arise from the action of the outer shell (largely composed of molten iron) sloshing around a solid inner core. A magnetic flip would necessarily be associated with accentuated movement of the core and crust, which would undoubtedly create earthquakes. And earthquakes can shift massive amounts of rock, redistributing mass across the surface of the earth. So when  the next literal pole reversal happens, it could be caused by geomagnetic events surrounding earthquakes caused by extreme upheaval of the components of the geomagnetic shield.

Causing the earth to literally turn upside down. Literally flip the poles, in a catastrophic destruction of the earth we know. And possibly change the rotation.  NASA says no. That changing the rotation of the earth is impossible. (Maybe a change in the earth's rotation would damage Mideast self-esteem? Isn't that NASA's mission now?)

I admit, this is just speculation. And speculating on a change in the earth's polarity may be utter nonsense.
But isn't it interesting that Isaiah seems to describe just such an event:
"Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
And it shall come to pass, that he who fleeth from the noise of the fear shall fall into the pit; and he that cometh up out of the midst of the pit shall be taken in the snare: for the windows from on high are open, and the foundations of the earth do shake. 19 The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. 20The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again." (Isaiah 24:1; 18-20)
Here's to watching this from the mezzanine.

I like how, even with her scientific brain, she make it all very plain.
Cheers!
